Opening of the 2026 New York City International Book Fair with 160 Activities, Twice That of Last Year’s Program
The New York City International Book Fair (FILNYC) 2026 kicked off its festivities on October 21 with a program of 160 activities over five days, twice that of last year. Scheduled to continue through October 25 in John Jay College, Manhattan, this year’s eighth edition of the program will attempt to raise the presence of Spanish-language literature in the United States.
This program, organized by the CUNY Institute of Mexican Studies at the City University of New York, includes panels, readings, workshops, professional sessions for the publishing industry, and book clubs. Among other things, this year’s program also brings children and young adult-oriented activities and materials for teachers interested in promoting Spanish-language literature.
Spanish-Language Literature Gets Center Stage
“Sea we are” is the motto for this year’s fair, which will focus on language, memory, identity and the connections that exist between migrant and multicultural communities.
According to Deyanira Alvarez, the executive director of FILNYC, the creation of space for Spanish-language authors to exhibit their literature without the need to prove their identity is an important aspect of the fair.
This festival keeps fostering connections within the Hispanic cultural organizations, as well as introduces new literary figures to American audiences.
This is proven by the number of proposals that have been submitted in response to the call; more than 300 proposals have been received for presentations, but only 15 were chosen.
Moderated Discussion Featuring Cecilia Vicuña and Mayra Santos-Febres
Discussion of the day includes artists and poets Cecilia Vicuña and Mayra Santos-Febres from Chile and Puerto Rico respectively, discussing the relationship between language and memory, geography and cultural experience in a conversation moderated by Mónica de la Torre.
The literary relations between New York City and Buenos Aires, two cities where migrations and multilingual societies have been creating and nurturing writers throughout the years, are the subject of the programme.
Tributes to Borges, Lorca and Other Literary Giants
The 2026 version honors a number of literary giants who have contributed a lot to Spanish language literature such as Jorge Luis Borges, Alejandra Pizarnik, Federico García Lorca, Juan Rulfo, Elena Garro and Gabriela Mistral.
It celebrates the 40 years since the death of Borges through a series of talks and celebrates the 90 years since the birth of Pizarnik.
Among the events expected in this fair include the fourth edition of Velada Lorca which will take place on October 22 at the Cervantes Institute. It will involve talks by writer David Uclés and flamenco singer Miguel Poveda.
First-Time Participation of the Whitney Museum as a Partner
The Whitney Museum of American Art is joining FILNYC as a partner for the first time this year and will have a panel discussion on 'Translation as Pre-Writing' moderated by Samantha Schnee from Words Without Borders along with translators Anna Kushner and Katie King.
The topic of the panel will be discussing the act of translation as a creative process.
One such example of another activity taking place during the festival is the artwork, 'Macondo York', which has been created in collaboration between the fair and Gabo Foundation in the form of a workshop.
Increasing the Scope of Spanish Literature
Most of the events will be held at John Jay College while others are organized by collaborating partners such as the Cervantes Institute and Americas Society. This program aims to bring together the writers, publishers, translators, culture institutions and readers so that links within the Spanish literature community can be reinforced.
Through doubling its program and organizing activities for youth and publishing community, FILNYC 2026 shows the increasing importance of Spanish literature within the US and the need for creating greater opportunities for its authors, translators and publishers.
